Expositio in Apocalypsim

1184 ( Casamari): Joachim begins the exegesis of the Apocalypse.

This is the greatest work of the abbot. It is divided into 8 books, and preceded by the Liber introductorius, which duplicates, with some variations, the Enchiridion super Apocalypsim. Joachim interprets, line for line, the book of the Apocalypse. He also plays with the symbolism of the number seven. The abbot interprets the Apocalypse as an ' endless prophecy'; a great vision which divides the history of the Church into "septem specialia tempora" corresponding to the seven parts of the Apocalypse. There is an eighth part corresponding to the glorification of the heavenly Jerusalem.
